A-19.1 – Act respecting land use planning and development
Summary
Why is this Useful
Special planning zones are useful in a post-disaster context because they allow the government to temporarily override existing land-use regulations in areas affected by disasters. This flexibility enables rapid decision-making and targeted interventions to support recovery, such as preventing unmitigated reconstruction in high-risk areas, temporarily pausing redevelopment whilst risk assessments are being carried out, or implementing new safety standards. By streamlining planning authority in designated zones during a time-critical period after a disaster, these provisions help ensure that recovery efforts are both timely and aligned with public safety and environmental protection goals.
